Hearts in Winter · Amelia Cross
The envelope arrived on a Tuesday, slipping through the mail slot with a whisper that Elena almost missed. She nearly tossed it with the rest of the bills and circulars, but something about the handwriting — elegant, deliberate, unmistakably old-fashioned — made her pause.
She turned it over. No return address. The stamp was foreign, though she couldn't place the postmark. Her name was written across the front in ink that had faded to a deep violet, as if the letter had been waiting a very long time to find her.
"This is ridiculous," she muttered, but her fingers were already tearing the envelope open. Inside, a single sheet of paper, folded once. The paper was thick, cream-colored, with a watermark she could barely make out in the afternoon light.
